Affton Athletic Makes Multiple Improvements in 2017

This year is an exciting one. Our off season preparations have been tremendous. We want to share these improvements with you to help build the excitement for the coming season.

We have developed a comprehensive plan to maintain and provide the best sports fields, organizational structure and facility possible. From the fields to the umpires, new marketing and auditing strategies, employee recognition and appreciation, to our offerings in the concession stands, we want Affton Athletic to be the best place to play ball in the region.

Field improvements have been many since the close of the fall season. Here are just a few things we have done, and things we will be doing:

  • New irrigation lines installed in all upper fields to help maintain and cultivate better turf and softer infields (expansion planned)
  • Field lips cut, thus evening the infield to the outfield
  • Infields to be tilled and graded to provide a smooth and even playing surface
  • Low and bald spots in the outfields are being repaired
  • Designated a grass area(s) for team warm-ups
  • Protective padding to be installed on the field light poles to protect players from injury
  • Backstop padding, for safety and predictive ball rebound, is being explored
  • Expanding an overhead  tarp system to provide shade for spectators on the upper fields
  • And much more!

Select leagues have been upgraded, with softball becoming USSSA sanctioned and baseball is introducing two levels of play with highly competitive (National) and competitive (American) leagues for teams to choose from.

The concession stands are also taking a great stride forward, and offering new fare this season. New will be pulled pork, new chip and candy selections, new premium beer offerings, as well as some fun specialty items like our version of the “Pepper Belly” and “Walking Taco”, which are bags of chips with chili, cheese and jalapenos, throw some lettuce in there for the later named item.

Umpiring also gets a great boost, as we have revamped and expanded our preseason training, which includes professional communication skills and expectations, as well as an expanded focus on technique and rules, to name a few. Providing the best officiating possible is one of our main goals.

As we continue to make advancements and strive to be the best, you will find Affton Athletic to be the place to play!
